Sattu Sharbat Recipe: How to Make This Summer Drink at Home
As temperatures rise across India, the search for a drink that is refreshing, filling, and genuinely good for you leads to one classic answer: sattu sharbat. Popular in Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, and Rajasthan for generations, this simple drink made from roasted Bengal gram flour is having a well-deserved revival. It fills you up without weighing you down, and it takes less than five minutes to make at home.
The key is starting with good-quality sattu. ODM Chana Sattu is dry-roasted and stone-ground from premium Bengal gram, free from artificial additives and fillers — the natural base your sharbat deserves.
What Is Sattu Sharbat?
Sattu is roasted and ground Bengal gram (chana), used for centuries as an everyday source of plant protein across North and East India. When stirred into chilled water with the right seasoning, it becomes a sattu sharbat — a naturally thick, earthy, and deeply satisfying drink.
Unlike sugary cold drinks or packaged juices, sattu sharbat keeps you feeling fuller for longer, making it an ideal mid-morning drink, a pre-meal refresher, or a post-workout option during summer.

Sattu Sharbat Recipe (Salted Version) — Serves 1
Ingredients
- 2–3 tablespoons ODM Chana Sattu
- 1 glass chilled water (approximately 200 ml)
- ¼ teaspoon ODM Kala Namak (Black Salt)
- ½ teaspoon ODM Amchoor Powder (for tartness)
- ¼ teaspoon roasted jeera (cumin seeds), coarsely crushed
- A squeeze of fresh lemon juice
- A few fresh mint leaves and ice cubes to serve
Method
- Make a lump-free paste first: Place the sattu in a tall glass. Add 2–3 tablespoons of water and stir vigorously until completely smooth. This step prevents lumps in the final drink.
- Add the remaining water: Pour in the rest of the chilled water and stir well.
- Season: Add kala namak, amchoor powder, roasted jeera, and lemon juice. Stir again.
- Taste and adjust: Add more amchoor for tartness, or a pinch more kala namak for depth. Every palate is different — make it yours.
- Serve immediately: Add ice cubes, drop in a few mint leaves, and drink right away for the best texture and flavour.
For the sweet version: Follow the same method, replacing the salted seasonings with 1–2 teaspoons of sugar or jaggery and fresh lemon juice. Skip the jeera and amchoor for a cleaner, lighter flavour.
Tips for the Perfect Glass Every Time
- Always paste first, water second — adding sattu directly to a full glass of water causes stubborn lumps that are hard to dissolve by stirring alone.
- Use chilled water — room temperature works, but chilled water makes the drink noticeably more refreshing.
- Toast your jeera — dry-roast the cumin seeds on a hot tawa for a minute until fragrant, then crush lightly. It adds a smoky undertone that elevates the salted version.
- Don't make it too thick — 2 tablespoons per 200 ml glass is the sweet spot. More sattu makes it a porridge-like drink rather than a refreshing sharbat.
- Drink it fresh — sattu settles quickly, so stir well just before drinking and don't let it sit for too long.
Why the Quality of Sattu Matters
The flavour of sattu sharbat depends almost entirely on one ingredient: the sattu itself. Many commercial brands blend in cheaper flours or use low-grade chana. ODM Chana Sattu is made from handpicked premium Bengal gram — dry-roasted to bring out a naturally deep, nutty flavour, then stone-ground to preserve texture and nutrition. No artificial additives, no fillers, no preservatives.
Pair it with a pinch of ODM Kala Namak for that distinctive tangy depth and a dash of ODM Amchoor Powder for bright sourness, and you have a glass that is hard to improve upon.
This summer, skip the packaged drinks. Pull out your ODM Chana Sattu and make the real thing.
