How to Eat Chuwara: Soaked, in Milk & 7 Everyday Uses

Quick answer: The easiest way to eat chuwara is to soak 2 to 3 pieces overnight, or simmer them in a cup of milk for 8 to 10 minutes until soft. You can also chop soaked chuwara into kheer, ladoo, halwa and chutney, where it adds natural sweetness.

Chuwara is hard straight out of the pack, and that is exactly how it should be. The trick is knowing how to soften it and where it fits in everyday Indian food. This guide covers every common way to eat it, how much to use, and the small mistakes that make it chewy or bland.

Also known as: chuwara is called dry dates or dried dates in English, and chhuhara or chuhara in Hindi. It comes in two kinds: golden peela chuwara (yellow dry dates) and dark kala chuwara (black dry dates).

What is chuwara, and why is it so hard?

Chuwara is a date that has been dried until almost all its moisture is gone. That is why it keeps for months without a fridge, and also why it feels like wood when you bite into it dry. Fresh or soft khajoor is a different thing: it is sticky and ready to eat. Chuwara needs water, milk or heat before it turns soft and sweet again.

Peela chuwara is steamed before drying, so it is paler and softens a little faster. Kala chuwara is dried longer, so it is darker, firmer and has a deeper, caramel-like taste. Both work in every method below. If you are unsure which to pick, our peela vs kala chuwara guide explains the difference.

How do you soften chuwara?

There are three simple ways. Pick the one that suits your time.

Method Time Best for
Soak in water overnight 8 to 10 hours Eating as is, chopping into ladoo or chutney
Soak in warm water 1 to 2 hours Same day use in halwa or kheer
Simmer in milk 8 to 10 minutes Chuwara milk, eaten warm

Once soft, press the chuwara gently and pull out the seed. It should come out cleanly. Always check the inside before eating or cooking.

7 ways to eat chuwara

  • Soaked, on its own: 2 to 3 soaked chuwara in the morning, seed removed. Drink the soaking water too if you like, it is mildly sweet.
  • Chuwara milk (chhuhara doodh): slice 2 to 3 chuwara, simmer in one cup of milk for 8 to 10 minutes, add a crushed green cardamom pod. No sugar needed. Many families drink this warm in winter.
  • In kheer: add chopped soaked chuwara in the last 10 minutes. It sweetens the kheer, so you can cut back on sugar.
  • In dry fruit ladoo: blend soaked, seeded chuwara into a paste and use it to bind chopped nuts. See our no-sugar dry fruit ladoo recipe.
  • In halwa and panjiri: chopped chuwara works well with suji, atta or gond halwa, and in winter panjiri.
  • In sweet chutney: blend soaked chuwara with amchoor, jeera and a pinch of kala namak for a quick date chutney for chaat.
  • With nuts as a snack: mix sliced soft chuwara with almonds and roasted makhana for a small evening snack box.

How many chuwara should you eat in a day?

For most adults, 2 to 3 pieces a day is a sensible amount. Chuwara is naturally high in sugar and calories, so a small handful goes a long way. It is a traditional food, not a medicine. If you are managing blood sugar, are pregnant, or follow a special diet, check with your doctor about the right amount for you.

Common mistakes that spoil chuwara

  • Chewing it dry: hard on the teeth and you miss the sweetness. Soak it first.
  • Boiling milk too hard: keep it on a gentle simmer so the milk does not catch at the bottom.
  • Skipping the seed check: always open each chuwara before cooking.
  • Storing it open: chuwara picks up moisture and smells. Keep it in an airtight jar, away from the stove. Our chuwara buying guide has full storage tips.

ODM chuwara is handpicked, with no added sugar, no artificial colours and no preservatives, so it softens evenly and tastes the way dry dates should.

FAQ

Should I soak chuwara before eating?

Yes. Soaking overnight in water, or simmering in milk, makes chuwara soft, easier to chew and sweeter. Eaten dry, it is very hard.

Can I eat chuwara at night with milk?

Yes, chuwara milk is traditionally taken warm in the evening, especially in winter. Keep it to 2 to 3 pieces and skip added sugar.

Is chuwara the same as khajoor?

They come from the same fruit. Khajoor is the soft date, while chuwara is the fully dried form, which is firmer and keeps much longer.

If you want to try it this week, start with a pack of ODM Peela Chuwara and a warm cup of chuwara milk.
